The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is one that affords needy South African students the possibility of getting education in public universities or TVET colleges. Therefore, besides paying tuition, the bursary is expected to provide certain allowances for the living expenses, accommodation, transport, books, and personal care.
Recent Update: R5,200 Monthly Allowance?
It is reported that the monthly student allowance might be increased to R5,200 effective from September 2025, following consultations between NSFAS and student representatives. The JnanaBandhuVidyalaya quoted this figure in its heading; however, I could not verify the exact terms or if it is an official statement. Nevertheless, it displays that there are ongoing dialogues regarding the affordability of tertiary education and improved support for students.
The Official NSFAS Allowance Caps For 2025
According to official NSFAS media releases, allowance caps for 2025 have been finalized after consultations with the Department of Higher Education and Training. These caps state the maximum amount approved in categories such as:
- Accommodation
- Living allowance
- Transport
- Books
- Personal care
Human support Or Assistive Devices
For instance, in the catered accommodation scenario, university students attract the highest levels under these categories, with other caps applying to TVET students or those under the non-catered arrangement.
Timeline And Disbursement For Payments
An upfront two-month payment has been disbursed to institutions by NSFAS, thus allowing the respective universities and TVET colleges to disburse these funds early in the academic year. For instance, in the same year, with correct registration data being supplied on time, students would have received their allowances between March 7 and 14, 2025.
There were also delayed payments reported by some institutions. For instance, Unisa noted delays in the awarding of August allowances.
What Students Should Do
Check your funding status on the NSFAS portal or from your institution’s student finance office. Upload your registration and banking details immediately to avoid delays in payments. If rejected, submit your appeal promptly as NSFAS usually allows for appeals within 30 days. Visit official NSFAS platforms to update yourself on allowance amounts and payment schedules.
