SASSA Biometric Verification 2025 : The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has declared that biometric verification will be made a prerequisite for payment of certain grants in September 2025. The aim is to bolster security measures, curtail frauds, and allow only deserving individuals to receive the grant.
Grants Which Will Be Biometrically Verified
According to SASSA, three main categories of grants would be subject to biometric verification come September:
- Aged Persons Grant – R2,315 (if under 75) and R2,335 (over 75)
- Child Support Grant – R560
- Foster Child Grant – R1,250
Persons in these categories must undergo fingerprint and facial ID verification to unlock payment.
Why Biometric Verification?
Over the years, an estimated millions of Rands have been lost to fraudulent claims and duplicate applications. Biometric checks should eliminate identity theft as well as ghost recipients of the grants.
This was explained by a SASSA spokesperson who further stated, “This is not meant to inconvenience beneficiaries but to protect them. By confirming their identity biometrically, we ensure grants go to the right people.”
To Complete Verification
Beneficiaries have to complete the following steps in their verifications:
- Go to a SASSA office or approved mobile unit.
- Produce at least one valid South African ID document.
- Have fingerprints and facial scans taken at the office.
- Wait for confirmation via SMS or confirmation from the office.
SASSA continues to roll out mobile biometric units into the rural areas so that they can reach those who cannot travel long distances.
What Happens If You Don’t Verify?
If biometric verification is not completed, this can lead to a delay or suspension of September grant payments. Beneficiaries should thus really find the time to complete the process asap so as to avoid interruption.
Payment Dates For September 2025
Though new to biometric checks, SASSA has confirmed that payment dates remain unchanged:
- Older Persons Grants: Monday, 22 September 2025.
- Disability Grants: Tuesday, 23 September 2025.
- Children’s and other grants: Wednesday, 24 September 2025.
