This opening statement gave assurance for greater certainty on payments so that students can plan ahead and focus on their studies.

Breakdown Of The R5,200 NSFAS Allowance

The NSFAS allowance has two categories intended to assist the student through his academic life.

  • Living Allowance : R1,650
  • Transport Allowance : R750 (for those not residing in NSFAS-funded residences)
  • Meal Allowance : R1,500
  • Learning Materials/Book Allowance: Credited separately within the funds disbursed for the year on a monthly basis
  • Accommodation : Paid directly to the institutions or service providers, but constitutes a significant part of the R5,200 total

It is good to note that not all students receive the same breakdown as the allocations technique depends on whether they stay in residences or commute from home.

Official September 2025 Payment Dates

Confirmed by NSFAS, the student allowances of September 2025 will be disbursed on Monday, 9 September 2025. The payments will be received directly into the students’ NSFAS bank accounts or onto the newly introduced NSFAS Mastercard system.

The students are being advised to make sure that their banking details are updated and verified so that unnecessary delays will be avoided. Those on the direct pay system with universities or TVET colleges directly receive money on and from the same date.

Why This Is Important For Students

In South Africa, the R5,200 allowance is actually a lifeline for many students, especially those from low-income households, as it allows them to pay for the basics as they channel their energy towards academic commitments.

Delayed NSFAS payments have been a source of frustrations and protests in the past. With the September specific payment dates thus confirmed by the responsible body, it shall bring a sigh of relief from the students, who will henceforth be undergoing timely payments of their allowances.

How To Check Payment Status

Some ways students can check their NSFAS payment status are:

  • Official NSFAS website.
  • NSFAS Wallet/Mastercard App.
  • University or TVET financial aid offices.

It is recommended to check the website regularly for updates and to make sure that they are meeting their academic and funding requirements so that funding is not disrupted.
