SASSA Suspends 12,000 Grants In September 2025 – Who Lost Their Payments?

SASSA Grant Suspensions 2025 : By September 2025, the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) announced the suspension of over 12,000 beneficiaries, sending panic and fear amongst the millions that derive their living from social grants. The agency stated that the suspensions followed investigations in which it became obvious that those suspended were not eligible any longer under the prevailing set of rules.

Why Were Beneficiaries Suspended?

SASSA said the suspensions occurred following routine eligibility checks, which included instances of:

  • Fraudulent application where grants were received from multiple sources illegally.
  • Failure to update records with the agency with respect to changes in ID number, bank, or address information.
  • Death of the registered beneficiary wherein payments were still withdrawn by third parties.
  • Income alteration wherein a beneficiary was no longer meeting a means test criterion.

These suspensions, according to SASSA, help secure funds meant for the most vulnerable citizens.

Which Grants Are Affected?

Types of grants affected by these suspensions were:

  • Older Persons (Pension) Grant
  • Disability Grant
  • Child Support Grant
  • Care Dependency Grant
  • R350 SRD Grant

Not all beneficiaries in these categories were affected. Only those flagged during verification checks were.

What Must Suspended Beneficiaries Do?

Affected individuals have been urged by SASSA to:

  • Visit their nearest SASSA office with a valid ID to ascertain the status.
  • If their suspension was due to missing or incorrect details, update the information.
  • Appeal if they believe that their suspension was carried out in error.

Beneficiaries that have unfairly been affected will be set right and have their grants reinstated once the correction is effected.
