Good News! SASSA Monthly Grants Get a Boost in 2025 – Check the New Payouts

Starting in April and extending through October, South Africans can expect increases to their SASSA grants. This step is to aid South Africans affected by the trading economy, specifically the living cost, and to assist those under the worst conditions. Below, we outline the new amounts, dates, and corresponding requirements for the beneficiaries.

Updated Grant Amounts for 2025

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has announced a sequence of grant increases, starting in April 2025 and another in October 2025, to manage the increases in inflation or new economic pressures:

  • Old Age Grant: In April, payments for the 60 to 74 age group increased from R2 190 to R2 310 and for the 75+ age group from R2 210 to R2 330. Another increase of R10 for October 2025 is scheduled, which is expected to increase the payments to R2 320 and R2 340, respectively.
  • Disability Grant: This grant is set to increase from R2 190 to R2 310 in April, followed by another increase of R10 to R2 320 in October.
  • Child Support Grant: This increases from R530 to R560 per child while the Top-Up Grant for double orphans increases from R270 to R280, resulting in a total of R840 per child.
  • Foster Care Grant: The grant increases by R70, and the previous amount of R1,180 now amounts to R1,250 per month.
  • Increases in Social Grants and Relief of Distress (SRD) Grants: In April, care dependency grants will climb from R2,190 to R2,310, rising yet again at the end of the year in October by R10, reaching R2,320. Special grants will increase their assistance from R530 to R560 a month. The social relief of distress grant (SRD) was increased to R370 early this year, and is, pending government approval, forecast to further increase to R420-R500 by June.

The above increases allow over 19 million people to afford basic necessities such as meals or education.

Schedule for Payments and Methods of Collections

In an effort to reduce the long queues at payment points, SASSA implements a staggered payment schedule. Kindly take note of the payments made in August 2025:

  • The Older Persons Grant: 5th August
  • The Disability Grant: 6th August
  • Children’s Grants: 7th August
  • The SRD Grant: 23rd to 30th August, subject to banking clearing cycles.

Withdrawals may be made via bank accounts, SASSA cards, or authorised pay points such as Shoprite and Pick ‘n Pay. Please check that your banking information and identity documents are current on the SASSA system to prevent any holdups. Additionally, SASSA has indicated that there is no obligation to withdraw money on the day funds are paid, as the money is secure in the accounts.

Preventing Unnecessary Issues

Holidays, incorrect personal information, and technical glitches are a few of the more common causes of delays in payments. You can prevent delays by checking your information on the Moya App, GovChat, the SASSA website, or on the Moya App. Other examples of misinformation relating to SASSA include blanket claims of double payments in June 2025. SASSA has issued a statement indicating that reliable payment information is only available from their official social media pages or their toll-free number, 0800 60 10 11.

What’s Next: What to Expect

Completion of the UBIG grant is expected by the end of September 2025, after its initial ‘September 2025’ target and is to replace the SRD grant, potentially offering broader coverage. The new system’s approved payments should be processed faster, especially since SASSA is scheduled to resume the project on the 20th of March, 2025, to phase out the gold cards with Post Bank black cards. Post Bank black cards are said to be safer and more secure for transactions. It would be best if all of these changes are aimed to improve and resolve the struggles of the citizens and provide adequate support.
