NSFAS Applications Open For 2026 : Recently, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme, commonly known as NSFAS, has opened a window for prospective students to get funding for their tertiary studies for the coming year 2026. This therefore opens a window for thousands of South African learners. Students are highly recommended to apply very early as the cut-off date has been specified as 15 November 2025.
Who Can Apply For NSFAS 2026?
NSFAS funding schemes help students from low to working-class families who cannot afford the high tuition fees and costs of university or TVET college. The potential candidate must meet the following requirements:
- Are South African citizens.
- Have a combined household annual income of R350,000 or less.
- Have an income cap of R600,000 or less for students with disabilities.
- Has either applied or been accepted at a public university or TVET college in South Africa.
What Does NSFAS Cover?
For those who qualify, NSFAS does indeed cover tuition fees among other comprehensive support offered, viz.:
- Registration and tuition fees.
- Accommodation allowances for students residing either on campus or in approved accommodation.
- Travel/transport allowances for commuters.
- Learning materials and book allowances.
- Personal care stipends, such as meals and other necessary items.
Such comprehensive support guarantees that a student is not impeded financially as they are able to concentrate solely on their studies.
How To Apply For NSFAS 2026
Applications must be filed online via the NSFAS application portal. The following documents are required from students:
- Copy of their ID document or Smart Card certified by an attorney or commissioner of oaths or any person empowered to administer oaths.
- Proof of income for the household, i.e., salary slips, affidavits, or social grant information.
- Consent forms signed by parents or guardians allowing their income to be verified.
- Academic reports or letters of acceptance from institutions.
Once submitted, one can check the status of their application through the myNSFAS accounts.
Why You Should Apply Early
15 November 2025 is the closing date for submissions, beyond which no late applications shall be entertained. It has been advised by NSFAS, therefore, that all aspiring students should apply as soon as the application process is opened in order to avoid the system being too busy near the closing date, hence resulting in lost documentation.
