R12,500 Youth Support Grant Opens August 15, 2025: How to Apply and Qualify

The current youth jobless rate is 46.5%. To combat this, the South African government plans to provide a grant of R12,500 to every unemployed South African citizen between the ages of 18 to 35 on 15th August 2025. The money from such grants may be used from kick-starting one’s business, advancing one’s vocational training, to even initiating community projects. The grant will be managed by SASSA (South African Social Security Agency) and the NYDA (National Youth Development Agency) and will report to entrepreneurship and economic development. 

Eligibility Criteria

The following conditions have to be met to be eligible for the R12,500 Youth Support Grant:

  • Must be a South African citizen with a valid 13-digit ID or smart card 
  • Must be between the ages of 18 and 35 at the time of application 
  • Must be unemployed and a non-beneficiary of other government grants such as the SRD, UIF or NSFAS 
  • Must pass a means test (bank balance below R624) 
  • Proposal Submit a structured proposal detailing the innovative allocation of funds with a clear focus on employment creation and social impact.

Preference will be given to applicants from low-income households and from rural areas.

How to Apply

The application window opens on 15 August 2025 and closes on 30 September 2025 (to be confirmed). The applications will be largely processed online to streamline the processing speed, especially for rural users. Please adhere to the following steps:

  • Document Preparation: Compile all necessary documents including a South African identity document, proof of unemployment (e.g., a Department of Labour affidavit), a business plan, and bank account details.
  • Access Official Websites: Obtain the application form from www.gov.za, services.sassa.gov.za, or www.nyda.gov.za. Ensure that you search under the Youth Support Grant heading. 
  • Account Registration: Register an account by providing your identity number, email, and mobile phone number. 
  • Fill and Submit: Enter your personal details, upload your business plan, and submit. Both the documents and details must be autocorrected.
  • Application: For updates, check sassa-status.web.za or call 0800 60 10 11. All successfully approved applications within the 30 to 60 day period will be paid via bank transfers. 

Purpose and Impact

The grant looks to provide funding for youth entrepreneurs, technology startup owners, and even community project managers such as urban farmers. This grant is in relation to the NDP initiatives that strive to lower the unemployment and increase the GDP of the country. This grant can fund innovative ideas on a larger scale, which can result in great employment opportunities, the eradication of poverty, and the upliftment of impoverished areas.
