The Child Support Grant was recently increased to R560 from R530 for every eligible child. Since 1 September 2025, SASSA has been guaranteeing payments are made on time and advises beneficiaries to check payment dates if the payment is not in their banks, including updating of their own personal information.
Who Qualifies For The Grant?
An applicant qualifies for Child Support Grant if:
- They are the primary caregiver (e.g., parent, grandparent, or guardian) residing in South Africa.
- They are South African citizens, permanent residents, or refugees.
- They have a household combined income lower than different indicated levels (if single R52,800 per annum and if married R105,600 per annum).
- The child in question must be younger than 18 years of age, cannot be under care in a state institution, and has to be staying with the caregiver who is not paid for the care.
How Much Will You Receive?
Currently, the grant amount stands at R560 per month per child after the increase of R30 introduced in fiscal year 2025.
Payment Schedule & Process
- Period for Grant Payment in September 2025:
- The Child Support Grant with all other children grants will be paid on Thursday, 4 September 2025 .
- In the previous months, it was a bit different: grant money for aged persons came on the 2nd business day, for disability on the 3rd and for children on the 4th.
Receiving Your Money:
- Via direct deposit into a bank or Postbank account.
- With a SASSA card, which can be used to pay at pay points and retail stores.
- In cash, at designated pay points.
- Should you be in any way unable to collect them personally, you may also instruct SASSA to allow another individual to collect payment on your behalf.
Reviews, Changes, And What To Look Out For
The grant and review may be suspended if:
- Changes occur in the caregiver’s income or family circumstances;
- What the recipient of the grant failed to respond to review notices (SASSA usually gives three months’ warning);
- The child turns 18, dies, is institutionalized, or leaves the caregiver’s home.
