Social Grants, such as the Older Persons, Disability, Child Support, and Social Relief of Distress, bolster vulnerable South Africans. They allow recipients to access food, healthcare, and even school fees. In August 2025, SASSA took steps to further alleviate the cost of living, issuing supplementary and early payments through the Social Grants Programme.
Early Payment Dates for August 2025
Due to system updates and public holidays, SASSA will begin payments for August 2025 in advance so as to avoid any delays. There will also be less payment point congestion than usual in an attempt to reduce queues and prioritise serving the vulnerable. The approved payment dates are as follows:
- Older Persons Grant: 5 August 2025
- Disability Grant: 6 August 2025
- Child Support and Other Grants: 7 August 2025
In contrast to other grants with fixed payment dates, the SRD R370 grant date changes monthly. Beneficiaries should consult the SASSA website (sassa.gov.za), where the dates are issued, typically in the last week of the preceding month, and published. Timely payments aid grant recipients in budgeting effectively.
Additional Remuneration for Certain Groups
The rising cost of living has a deleterious impact on a number of areas. In an attempt to address this, the Department of Social Development has declared one-time bonus payments to the following grant categories:
- Beneficiaries of foster care grants
- Recipients of permanent disability grants
- Individuals above the age of 75
- War veterans
No specific figures have been attached to the bonuses, but the intention is to help fixed-income earners. In a bid to protect older persons from ageing-related scams, Social Security Agency (SASSA) fraudster impersonators have warned people to check their bonus eligibility through official means.
Why Updates Count
For all payment beneficiaries, SASSA advises updating one’s personal and banking details as a precaution and per the new regulations. As is traditional, payments run into problems whenever there is a lack of a valid bank or beneficiary account detail. Beneficiaries can update their information by visiting any SASSA office or through the SASSA portal. When visiting SASSA offices, beneficiaries need to bring their valid identification documents, proof of banking details, and updated contact details. Given the earlier payment dates, taking such precautionary steps is necessary and goes a long way in reducing the inconveniences.
Putting a Stop to Fraud and Scams
Earlier this month, SASSA notified all beneficiaries about scam calls and messages promising ‘early pay’ and ‘special bonus’ from SASSA, alleging to come from the organisation. Such offers are well known to request personal and banking details. SASSA and its partners have explicitly stated that no payment related information will be given out, especially not through third party telephone calls, SMS, and unauthorised social media or social network sites. It is of utmost concern that the recipient protect the ID and bank PIN at all times. SASSA should also be notified through the toll-free number 0800 60 10 11 when suspicious behaviour is detected.
Grant Status Checking Procedures
SASSA grant recipients can check the status of their grants through the following:
- The Website: Access srd.sassa.gov.za; input your South African ID and your registered phone number.
- WhatsApp: Using 082 046 8553, send your application ID.
- Moya App: Use the “Discovery” tab to check your SRD status.
- SMS: Text “STATUS [ID Number]” to 32555.
Grant status checking enables the beneficiaries to check the payment schedule, verify if any fraudulent transaction is being attempted, and track the status of the application.
