Mass turmoil has been created concerning social grant payments for September 2025, thereby providing some level of relief to many South Africans facing the pressing issue of inflation on the rise. As this adjustment falls in the 2025/2026 budget year, the government hopes to assist needy and vulnerable groups, including aged persons, primary caregivers, and persons with disabilities. Join me as I look into the grant increases and payment dates that will affect the beneficiaries.
Grant Amount Adjustments for September 2025
Although mostly they would have still been increased by the inflation rate of about 5.7%-5.9%, keep in mind that the VAT rate has been increased by 0.5% so the rates have accordingly been adjusted as follows, as per SASSA:
- Older Persons Grant: For the ages of 60-74, R2,315, and for older persons of 75 years and above, R2,335.
- Disability Grant: R2,315 per month paid to persons whose disabilities are either permanent or temporary and who are 18 to 59 years of age.
- Child Support Grant: An increase of R30 to caregivers-the amount is R560 per child against R530 earlier.
- Foster Care Grant: R1,250 per child paid to foster parents.
- Care Dependency Grant: R2,315 for children with disabilities requiring full-time care.
Monthly income for war-vounded and honourable-given-persons in history of dignity goes to war at R2,335 for persons so fit from 60 years and above. The SRD Grant will be increased by another R20, from R350 to R370. Pressure upon the workings of lower-tier families will be accelerated by the State in the 2025 Budget Speech.
Payment Calendar for the Month of September 2025
SASSA laid down a schedule for September 2025 for fast-track proceedings to pre-empt huge congestion at pay points. The following payments were confirmed for dates:
- Older Persons Grant: Tuesday, 2nd September 2025
- Disability Grant: Wednesday, 3rd September 2025
- Children’s Grants-Booster Child: Thursday, 4th September 2025
- SRD Grant: 17-23 September 2025
Beneficiaries shall receive money either through direct bank credits or can withdraw money through window services at Pick n Pay, Shoprite, or SASSA pay points. SASSA advises keeping the money in their accounts until withdrawal, thus limiting congestion at payment points.
Qualifying and Verification Processes
This increase was going to be made into effect on September 2025 on all beneficiaries existing by the month of the event without them having to go for a reapplication. Eligible groups include South African citizens or citizens holding permanent residence status or persons on registration as refugees, while bearing in mind several criteria in respect of either age or disability status. In the collection of biometric verification, SASSA introduced fingerprint scanning or facial recognition to secure the verification system against fraudulent practices. Beneficiaries are advised to keep their personal and banking information updated from time to time and avoid delays in payment through legitimate channels such as the sassa website, www.sassa.gov.za.
Impact on Beneficiaries
These grant increments are the lifeline for over 19 million South Africans across the nation, all needing to finance food, transport, and medicines. That very small amount of R30 assists millions of caregivers across the country. Broadly, these increments reduce poverty and inequality, while providing some cushioning against economic shocks; thereby, strengthening SASSA within the social welfare framework.
