Presiding over social grant disbursements, The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), has released an updated grant payment schedule. Payments for the approved Older Persons Grants, Child Support Grants, and Disability Grants will be disbursed together with the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grants. With the current economic situation, the funds will help cover food, medical, and transport expenses. I have also proposed some measures to facilitate smoother withdrawals; the timetable is attached to this message. The funds are crucial in assisting many people with their daily struggles.
September 2025 Grant Payments
In light of current challenges faced by people with disabilities, as well as the ongoing issues with payment centre congestions, SASSA has announced the dates for the September 2025 grant payments. These are as follows:
- Disability Grants: Wednesday, 3 September 2025
- Older Persons Grants: Tuesday, 2 September 2025
- Child Support and Other Grants: Thursday, 4
- September 2025 SRD R370 Grants: From 24 to 30
- September 2025 (exact dates to be sent via SMS)
One notable advantage is that fewer people queue at ATMs, post offices, and shops to collect grant funds. This benefit extends to the flexibility of the grant drawdown timings. More importantly, if grant beneficiaries choose to withdraw their funds past the set drawdown date, they are at liberty to do so, as the funds would remain in their accounts until accessed. This grant drawdown method is vastly superior in terms of the safety and cash efficiency it offers grant beneficiaries.
Updated Grant Amounts
In support of the increasingly difficult living conditions, SASSA revised grant amounts as of April 2025. The revised figures for September 2025 are:
- Older Persons Grant: R2,310 (60–74 years); R2,330 (75+ years)
- Disability Grant: R2,310
- Child Support Grant: R560 per child, plus an additional R270 (if eligible)
- SRD Grant: R370
With these new amounts, 19 million beneficiaries are assisted, while social grants are estimated at R284.7 billion for the 2025/26 fiscal year. Remember SRD grant distributions are managed separately, and the payment dates will be shared with recipients via SMS.
How You Can Access Your Grant
Grants can be issued to beneficiaries in the following ways, for the purpose of convenience:
- Direct Bank Deposits: This method deposits funds into verified bank accounts, which include Postbank and other banks.
- SASSA Postbank Black Card: The SASSA Gold Card is set to be phased out in 2025. The Black Card can be used at ATMs, and retail outlets such as Pick n Pay, Checkers, and Shoprite.
- Cash Pay Points: These are specially designed for people without bank accounts and are especially useful in rural zones.
Beneficiaries should keep their banking and contact information up to date in order to avoid problems. To check payments, beneficiaries may use the SASSA app, go to sassa.gov.za, or dial the toll-free number 0800 60 10 11.
How To SAVE TIME and Avoid Scams
The following instructions are crucial in Order to facilitate grant collection without having to deal with scammers:
- Update Your Information: Validate that your phone number and bank information with SASSA are current.
- Keep Away from Large Groups: Try to collect your grant a couple of days after the payment date to steer clear of long queues.
- Be Alert: Use only the official SASSA channels and report anything suspicious that you might be called or messaged about. Do not share your PIN number or any identification information to anyone.
